Juliana Trillo, CSHS's outgoing University of Oklahoma museum fellow, will present Framing the Southwest: The Picture Frames of Eanger Irving Couse. 

Built upon research by E. I. Couse's granddaughter, the late Virginia Couse Leavitt, Framing the Southwest details the origins and varying influences on the elaborate, handcrafted frames surrounding Couse's paintings. This presentation and associated online exhibition links Couse's French academic training to his approach to frame design, lists Couse's history with commercial frame makers, and describes his own frame-making process, informed by Pueblo aesthetics and made with local materials. Trillo also analyzes the lasting impression of Couse's frames in contemporary Southwestern art.
