Author event: John Sherman Sharing Stories in Taos
Join us in the 1915 Sharp Studio to hear author John Sherman tell the tale of some of the characters and their stories that helped form his 1990 book Taos: A Pictorial History. After the free talk and Q&A, John will sign books—TAPH and Santa Fe: A Pictorial History will both be for sale with part of the proceeds supporting Couse-Sharp Historic Site. Admission is free.
Paid parking available a half block east in the municipal lot on Kit Carson Road, with free parking for those with disabled permits available on site. Please note: Because of the site’s nature as a place of historic preservation, most buildings and grounds are not ADA accessible.
About the author
Sherman, a writer and photographer residing in Indianapolis, was a resident of Santa Fe from 1977 to 1985. During that time, he researched and wrote Santa Fe: A Pictorial History, which earned him the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation.
William Gannon, who issued a trade edition of the Santa Fe book, published John’s companion volume, Taos: A Pictorial History. It contains 250 photos, most of which had never been published.
In the process of researching and writing Taos, John interviewed many “old-timers” who regaled him with stories and lent him photos—and, often, a glass or more of strong drink! He will be sharing tales about these people, now long gone, and the sheer adventure of preparing a manuscript covering centuries of Taos, with the help of so many who were so involved in the social life and history of the town.
Also, while in New Mexico, John was Editor of El Palacio at the Museum of New Mexico, a teacher at St. Catherine Indian School, a freelance writer for several publications, including a series of history-related articles for Albuquerque Journal North, and gave frequent poetry readings and lectures. He is the author of seven other books, spoken-word CDs, an opera libretto, and numerous articles. His photographs have been accepted for many juried exhibitions.
